HOW TO HOLD YOUR PENCIL

There's no 'one right way' to hold a pencil, but it is truth that some methods are better than others when it comes to drawing and creating ‘chiaroscuro’ effects. In fact, the way in which you hold your pencil will affect the marks that you make on the paper. I use only one position: The tripod grip, which is also the most common way to hold a pencil.

The Tripod Grip

As you can see from the picture above, the tripod grip is the same as the one we use for writing (with the hand resting lightly on the table). There is quite a lot of control with this grip, which makes it great for details.

I use this grip for all my lines and shadows. Sometimes, for longer and quick strokes I hold the pencil well back from the point, and allow the entire forearm to swing freely from the elbow, with a minimum of wrist and finger movement.

There are other ways to hold the pencil, but I do not force myself to use any other grips. I believe we all should follow our instinct and body when drawing. Find your own grip!!!

OTHER WAYS TO HOLD THE PENCIL

The Vertical Grip

This is a good position when starting out. You basically turn the back of your hand to the paper, loosely holding the pencil between your thumb, palm, and forefinger, (while the other fingers act to stabilize the pencil). This grip forces you to draw with your shoulder and it is perfect for drawing large subjects. I use this technique to better position my figures within portraits.

The Paint Brush Grip

The paint brush grip is another great position for laying out the composition, as it is perfect for creating light and delicate marks. I use it also when directing long hair and defining clothes. The pencil is held in a similar manner to holding a paint brush, positioned upright and with the back edge between your index finger and the base of your thumb.
